"The three of them have two things in common- violence and perfume."
We live in a surreal world. One where male violence against women is, to a degree, normalised, and we almost accept it as natural that women should not have the freedom to walk alone in the dark that those of us with a y chromosome take for granted. This is surreal, so why not use surrealism to tackle it?This short bit of surreal cinema is absolutely superb, subverting the male gaze in every way. The acting style is deliberately removed from realism. Musicals are surreal by nature, and this leans into that. The most obvious phallic symbol is a pathetic little worm. The scene of sexual violence is particularly surreal in its presentation, removing any possibility of fetishising it.
The music, font, clothes, everything, are of course gloriously '80s, but the message resonates just as strongly forty years on, sadly.
